Overview

Jeddah Waterfront is a tourist destination on the Red Sea coast in Jeddah Governorate, laid out as seven varied plazas extending from An-Nawras Roundabout to Jaber bin Al-Harith Street. [2] Its distinctive architectural design allows it to host the city's major entertainment and sporting events, among them the Jeddah Corniche Circuit, which stages Formula 1 races and a variety of sports tournaments. [1]

Location and Extent

The waterfront extends over seven varied plazas running from An-Nawras Roundabout to Jaber bin Al-Harith Street, with a length of 4500 metres. [2] The plazas carry names inspired by the marine world: An-Nawras, Al-Asdaf, At-Tawhid, Ar-Rimal, Al-Lulu, As-Sayyad and Al-Khaleej Plaza. [2]

The waterfront's capacity reaches 120,000 people spread over an area of about 730,000 square metres. [2]

Development Phases

The waterfront development project was carried out in phases, including the fourth and fifth, and it produced the longest pedestrian bridge in the Kingdom, 650 metres long, linking the Prince Faisal bin Fahd Street promenade with the waterfront promenade. [3] Three beaches were set aside for swimming, overseen by five towers, along with a fishing pier 125 metres long. [3]

A control and monitoring centre was established in the project, supervising through 120 cameras distributed along the waterfront, with a high-definition system compatible with facial-recognition technology. [3] The waterfront opened in 2017, then took the name "Roshn Waterfront" in 2022. [4]

Facilities and Services

The waterfront includes seven varied recreational zones, numerous interactive fountains, children's play areas, beaches designated for swimming and a marine pier, and its development aims to reach about 55 million visitors a year. [5]

The waterfront Corniche includes a seaside promenade running along its full length, two bicycle tracks, equipped sports areas and a dedicated path for the blind, in addition to green areas of 275,000 square metres. [6] The waterfront also has an interactive fountain up to 300 metres long that was operated to mark the 88th National Day in September 2018. [7]

Roshn Waterfront

Roshn Group is one of the major projects wholly owned by the Public Investment Fund, and the waterfront's name became associated with it after it took the name "Roshn Waterfront" in 2022. [4] In 2024 the group unveiled the art mural of the waterfront promenade in its new form, and the waterfront set a new record in the Guinness World Records for the longest drawing on a promenade in the world. [4]

The number of visitors to the waterfront exceeds 55 million people a year, making it one of the main destinations in the city of Jeddah. [4]

Hosting and Events

The waterfront's architectural design and its modern facilities make it a place for hosting the governorate's major entertainment events, most notably the Formula 1 races at the Jeddah Corniche Circuit and the various sports tournaments it stages. [1]

Awards and Recognition

The Jeddah Waterfront project won the Creativity Award for 1439 AH in the field of government creativity from Jeddah Governorate, along with the Makkah Award for Excellence for the same year in the field of environmental excellence from the Emirate of Makkah Region. [2]

Related Waterfronts

Alongside Jeddah Waterfront, the development covered other waterfronts on the Jeddah coast, among them the North Corniche project for the fourth and fifth phases, extending along the Red Sea coast from An-Nawras Square northwards over a length of more than 4 kilometres, at a total cost estimated at 800 million riyals, whose implementation was launched in April 2015. [8] The development of the waterfront at Abhur Al-Janubiyah beach was also included, extending over 2.5 kilometres and an area of 180,000 square metres at a value exceeding 229 million riyals, within five projects with a total value reaching about 288 million and 273,000 riyals. [9]

In February 2024, the Jeddah Municipality announced the temporary closure of the waterfront at the "Central Corniche" for maintenance and preparation works for 10 days; the closure covered the seating and strolling areas from Al-Anani Mosque to Palestine Street, while road traffic remained open.
