Mohammed Abdo is a Saudi singer and composer from Ad-Darb Governorate in the Jazan Region, known as the “Artist of the Arabs”. He began singing in the 1960s and received the Cultural Personality of the Year award in 2025.

Overview

Mohammed Abdo is a Saudi singer and composer born in Ad-Darb Governorate in the Jazan Region. He is known as the “Artist of the Arabs” and by the kunya “Abu Noura”. He began his singing career in the early 1960s and has taken part for decades in the Kingdom's official national and cultural occasions. [7]

Birth and Early Life

Mohammed Abdo was born on 16 Sha'ban 1368 AH, corresponding to 12 June 1949, in Ad-Darb Governorate in the Jazan Region, in the southwest of Saudi Arabia. [7]

His radio appearances began in 1961 and continued until 1963, during which he recorded a number of records and took a role in radio theatre. One of his earliest works, “Ar-Rimsh At-Taweel”, sold thousands of records, and “Khallas Da'at Amanina” was among his first compositions. [7]

Artistic Career

Mohammed Abdo has about 200 national works, including “Fawq Ham As-Suhub”, “Ajal Nahnu Al-Hijaz” and “Min Badina Muwahhidin”. [7]

For about 30 years he took part in the National Festival for Heritage and Culture (Janadriyah) operettas as both composer and singer. He has performed at concerts and festivals inside and outside Saudi Arabia, including a London concert in 1997. [7][2]

His name appears in an official project documenting the rhythms of the Arabian Peninsula, which recorded an ensemble named the “Artist Mohammed Abdo Ensemble”. [5]

He took part in the 29th National Festival for Heritage and Culture operetta, “Kawkab Al-Ard” (Planet Earth), with lyrics by Abdullah Abu Ras and music by Nasser As-Saleh, alongside Abdul Majeed Abdullah, Rashed Al-Majed and Majed Al-Muhandis. [2]

At the ceremony for the people of the Northern Borders Region, he performed “Waqfat Fakhr”, with lyrics by Fahad Al-Musaad and music by Rabeh Saqer. [3]

At the first “Melody of the Kingdom” festival, organised by the Ministry of Culture in 2023, he sang on the opening night songs composed by Omar Kadras and by Dr Abd Rabb Idris. [4]

Honours and Awards

Mohammed Abdo received the Cultural Personality of the Year award in the fifth edition of the National Cultural Awards, organised by the Ministry of Culture, at a ceremony held at the King Fahd Cultural Centre in Riyadh on 14 September 2025. [1][7]

He was also honoured at “Artist of the Arabs Night” during Riyadh Season in 2022, and the “Mohammed Abdo Theatre at the Boulevard” in Riyadh is named after him. [7][6]
