Origins and name
The town of Al-Majmaah, seat of the governorate, dates to 820 AH/1417 CE, when Abdullah bin Saif al-Shammari settled there and people gathered around him, giving it its name. [1]
Other accounts link the name to the meeting of valleys above the town, notably Wadi Al-Mishqar and its tributaries and Wadi Al-Kalb. [1]
Location
Al-Majmaah lies about 180 km north-west of Riyadh, bordered by Thadiq to the south, Shaqra to the west, Al-Ghat and Al-Zulfi to the north-west and Al-Qassim to the north. [1]
Education
The governorate hosts Majmaah University, established in 1430 AH/2009 CE, and the Scientific Institute, founded in 1374 AH/1955 CE as one of five institutes opened that year. [1]
Heritage sites and rawdahs
Its archaeological sites include the Mount Munikh watchtower, the Al-Rubayah heritage house, the Ghaylan site, Al-Askar Palace and the old town wall. Its natural rawdahs include Rawdat Al-Nazim, Rawdat Al-Khashm and Rawdat Hattabah. [1]
