Overview
Sakaka City is a Saudi city in Al-Jouf region, and among its archaeological landmarks are Za'bal Castle and Sisra Well, alongside service and development projects and seasonal events.[1][3]
Its most prominent archaeological landmarks are concentrated in its northern side, where Za'bal Castle stands on the summit of a rocky mountain north of Sakaka City and Sisra Well lies about 200 metres away.[1][3]
Za'bal Castle
Za'bal Castle stands on the summit of a rocky mountain north of Sakaka City, on a site that gives it a view over the city's surroundings, and its construction dates to the Nabataean period extending from the first century BC to the first century AD.[1]
The castle's present structure dates to about 200 years ago; it is surrounded by a wall of stone and mud, contains four conical towers and two rooms, and covers an area estimated at 5,600 square metres.[1][2]
The castle through history
Za'bal Castle was among the strongest fortresses of its time, for it protected the people of Sakaka in times of war and secured the trade route between Iraq and the Levant that passed through the region.[1]
The King Abdulaziz Foundation documented Za'bal Castle as among the strongest military castles in terms of defensibility and fortification through its history.[2]
Sisra Well
Sisra Well is an archaeological well carved into sandstone more than two thousand years ago, and it lies 200 metres from Za'bal Castle.[3]
The opening of the well measures 8×9 metres and its depth reaches about 15 metres, and it has an eastern opening that once fed the farms with water through a channel carved in the rock, a well-known irrigation system dating to the Nabataean period and resembling the traditional aflaj.[3]
Development of the area around Za'bal Castle
The Al-Jouf Region Municipality carried out the project to develop the area around the heritage Za'bal Castle in Sakaka City at a value of 8.4 million riyals, and completion reached 48% in April 2023.[5]
The works of the project were completed in August 2024 with a completion rate of 97%, within efforts to upgrade the archaeological site and its urban surroundings.[6]
Municipal services
In 2018 the Al-Jouf Region Municipality signed the contract for the project to collect and transport waste from Sakaka City, at a value of 103,900,000 riyals and for a period of five years.[4]

On 21 November 2018 the foundation stone was laid for the new Al-Jouf Airport project within the 'Unified Airports Model' project, in line with the orientations of the National Transport and Logistics Strategy.[8]
Education and sports facilities
The sports stadium at Al-Jouf University was built on an area exceeding 6,000 square metres, and its stands accommodate more than 10,000 spectators.[9]
Festivals and events
The first Olive Festival in Al-Jouf achieved sales exceeding one million riyals, and its visitors numbered 50,000 from across the regions of the Kingdom.[10]
The activities of the first Dates Festival in Sakaka City concluded in September 2024 with about 60,000 visitors from Al-Jouf, across the regions of the Kingdom and the Gulf states, an event connected to the standing of date palm cultivation in Saudi Arabia.[11]
