Dumat Al-Jandal Governorate

A governorate in Al-Jawf west of Sakaka and one of northern Arabia's oldest towns, with Marid Castle, the Mosque of Umar ibn al-Khattab and Dumat Al-Jandal Lake.

The historic Marid Castle in Dumat Al-Jandal

History

Dumat Al-Jandal lies in Al-Jawf, about 40 km west of Sakaka. Its position between the ancient civilisations of the Near East made it a leading town of northern Arabia; its earliest mention dates to the first half of the first millennium BCE, in a campaign of the Assyrian king Sennacherib. [1]

Remains and landscape

Its remains include Marid Castle, dating to the first century BCE with inscriptions of the kingdoms that passed through, the historic Al-Dir' quarter and the Mosque of Umar ibn al-Khattab. Its lake is one of the region's attractions. [1]
